Financial software is arithmetic under audit. Rounding, currency and the exact moment a transaction is considered to have happened are not implementation details; they are the specification. Reconciliation against an external record is usually where a system is proved right or wrong.
What we have built here
Between a personal finance engine and an e-invoicing platform, the lesson was that money needs an exact type and an explicit rounding rule declared once. We left both systems able to reproduce a historical figure exactly, which is what makes a disagreement resolvable instead of arguable.
